U.N. to debate Central African Republic peacekeeping force as violence escalates

Watch this video

Crisis in the Central African Republic

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Gunfire appears to target church compound where 35,000 Christians have taken refuge
  • Eight people have been killed and 65 injured, Doctors without Borders says
  • Hours before a U.N. meeting on the crisis, heavy gunfire erupts near the presidential palace
  • More than 400,000 people -- nearly 10% of the population -- have been internally displaced
Bossangoa, Central African Republic (CNN) -- Months after a coup escalated chaos and violence in the Central African Republic, the U.N. Security Council meets Thursday to discuss how to stabilize the nation.
Hours before the meeting, heavy gunfire erupted near the presidential palace in the capital of Bangui, witnesses said.
Samuel Henryon, of Doctors without Borders, told CNN that eight people have been killed and 65 wounded in clashes in the city.
The agency, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, has 16 people helping at two hospitals where the wounded have been taken, it said in a statement. Twenty are badly hurt, most with gunshot, machete or knife wounds.
An official with the African-led peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic, Jean Pierre Sadou, told CNN he had seen eight dead bodies in the street. He said he had been told there were more bodies near the National Assembly.
Violence has raged in the country since a coalition of rebels ousted President Francois Bozize in March, the latest in a series of coups since the nation gained independence.
Christian vigilante groups have formed to battle Seleka, the predominantly Muslim coalition behind the president's ouster.
Multiple sources told CNN that the military commander of Seleka, Gen. Issa Yahya, was killed Thursday in Bangui. His second-in-command, Col. Saleh Zabari, is now thought to be in charge.
Sadou said Seleka is now back in control of the center of Bangui and the situation there is quiet. Fighting continues near the airport, however.
Members of Seleka told CNN that at least 30 people had been killed in the clashes in Bangui, men and women among them.
Christians take refuge
Left uncontrolled, militia groups are uniting along religious lines, leading to fears of sectarian violence.
The situation in Bossangoa, a town about 185 miles north of Bangui that is at the epicenter of displacement resulting from the violence, was extremely tense Thursday.
About 35,000 Christians have taken refuge in a Catholic church compound there.
The headquarters of the small regional peacekeeping mission told CNN that the second-in-command of Seleka had given the militia permission to attack the compound. The mission has sent reinforcements in defensive positions around the church to protect civilians, and the situation there is extremely tense.
A CNN team in the vicinity could hear sustained gunfire and rocket-propelled grenade fire that appeared to be directed at the church compound.
There is no word yet of any casualties or damage suffered.
Speaking to CNN before reports of the death of Seleka's commander emerged, Zabari said that it was believed there were armed elements in the compound but that unless those inside moved against them, they wouldn't attack it.
The U.S. State Department said the United States was "appalled by today's reports of the murder of innocent women and children outside of Bangui" and was working with its international partners to find the best way to stabilize the situation.
"This horrifying account is the latest in a string of reports that illustrate the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in the Central African Republic that could lead to an escalation in violence and further atrocities," a prepared statement said.
An unknown number of people have been killed in remote rural areas too risky to access. United Nations officials have warned that the violence between the Christian majority and Muslim minority now in power could lead to genocide.
More than 400,000 people -- nearly 10% of the population -- have been internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
"They are hiding in the bush without shelter, food, or drinking water, exposed to the weather and mosquitoes that carry malaria, the leading cause of death in the country," Doctors Without Borders said in a statement. The group has operated in the country for years and is helping dispatch mobile units to take care of the wounded.
French troops
An African Union force is already in the nation, but rights group say it's not enough to halt the escalating violence.
Last month, France pledged to send about 1,000 more troops to add to the 400 already there. The troops currently there are deployed to protect French nationals and help secure the airport in the capital, France said.
Sources in the African Union mission to the Central African Republic said Wednesday that more French troops are on their way to the nation.
The United Nations has suggested its peacekeeping force should eventually augment the African-led mission, and the meeting Thursday will focus on that.
Bozize fled the country after the coup led by rebel leader Michel Djotodia.
A transitional government is in place led by Djotodia, who was commander of the Seleka rebels. But the country continues to be wracked by unrest and new elections have yet to be held.

Presidency denies President Jonathan checked into German hospital yesterday

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, President Jonathan and First Lady Patience Jonathan, checked into a German hospital yesterday December 4th. The president left Abuja yesterday to attend a summit on Peace and Security in Africa organized by the French Government but Sahara Reporters claim a source in the presidency told them that the president left Nigeria due to health problems..
Contrary to the impression created that the trip was exclusively for the French-sponsored security summit, Mr. Jonathan and his wife will undergo tests and receive treatment in the same German hospital where his wife spent several months last year.
Our source added that the Nigerian president had been feeling unwell since returning from a recent trip to London where he was hospitalized for a serious stomach-related ailment. SaharaReporters had disclosed that the president fell seriously ill after a bout of bingeing on alcohol in celebration of his birthday.
Our source revealed that plans were made for the president to receive medical attention in Germany after Mr. Jonathan suddenly fell ill last weekend in his home-state of Bayelsa during a visit there. The president’s sudden illness almost led to his emergency evacuation to Germany, our Presidency source said. Mrs. Jonathan is also expected to receive follow-up medical treatment in the German hospital.
The Presidency has denied this report, saying it's a complete fabrication. See a statement after the cut..

Saharareporters Story on President Jonathan is a Complete Fabrication.
My attention has been drawn to the story on Saharareporters alleging that the President left Nigeria abruptly due to health challenges sustained as a result of alleged "heavy drinking". This story is another lie that saharareporters has become known for.
The Summit on Peace and Security in Africa which holds in Paris France between Thursday and Friday this week was scheduled months in advance and President Jonathan had confirmed attendance.
How can travel plans to attend a Security summit scheduled in advance with 50 Heads of State be "abrupt"? Did the President also "abruptly" arrange the attendance of the United Nations Secretary General, French President, Francois Hollande and fifty other Heads of State in Paris this week?
As was already indicated in the presidency's press release from two weeks ago, there was no "bout of bingeing on alcohol in celebration of his birthday" or on any other day.
The Nigerian public watched on live television as the President attended the 2nd North-East Economic Summit in Gombe, Gombe state,  on Tuesday the 3rd of December and visited the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Usman Abubakar immediately thereafter before returning to Abuja for travel on the same day. Are these the actions of a man who suffers from "abrupt health challenges"?
The public will note that Saharareporters' story does not provide any proof beyond referring to an unnamed "source". Again, I reiterate that this story is entirely false and we challenge them to produce even the slightest evidence to buttress their claims.

Reno Omokri,
Special Assistant to the President (New Media).

Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport Abuja temporarily closed

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has been temporarily closed by officials of the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority, NAMA, following the breakdown of a Saudi Arabian Boeing 747 cargo plane on the runway of the airport last night. The airport authorities say the plane, which veered after landing at the airport, has to be fixed before it can be evacuated from the runway.

This closure has adversely affected all flights that are Abuja bound as well as those that were billed to travel to other parts of the country. Many Abuja bound passengers are now stranded. Pic above shows passengers stranded at the airport in Abuja this morning.

FUTO sacks all academic staff for failure to return to classroom

For failure to return to classrooms, the Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has sacked all academic staff on its payroll with immediate effect. The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, through telephone.

According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2.

The senate council, he explained, had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that who were willing to resume would be adequately protected. Continue...

Meanwhile, the FUTO branch of ASUU has said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end o their meeting held on Monday, and signed by both the chairman and secretary, Dr Ikenna Nwachukwu and Dr F.M. Eke respectively.

The communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government commited itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement.

Chris Okotie Blasts Catholic Members, TB Joshua

From Pm News

All Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil, Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate, Chris Okotie, told his congregation on Sunday, leaving members bewildered.
Fifty-five year old Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Ikeja area of Lagos, western Nigeria, said the Catholic church is “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics “bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.”

“They are not Christians and have never been,” Okotie told a stunned congregation.
“They don’t know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual,” Okotie said.
He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan.
“The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times,” Okotie erupted.
He advised members of his church to come to the rescue of Catholics and evangelise them.
This, he said, was not out of disrespect but out of respect for the word of God.
He said those who know the truth should bring it to those who do not know it in the Catholic Church.
Okotie said one of the Catholic most revered Popes, Pope John Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic Church to Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, instead of Jesus himself. He said even the current Pope Francis has also done same.
He said Catholics are not Christians and do not worship the same Christ that he preaches in his church, at least the one spoken about in the Bible.
Okotie said he did not write the Bible but it was clear to him that those in the Catholic church were lost and were heading to hell fire.
“They don’t believe in heaven. They believe in purgatory, the purgatory that they invented,” Okotie said.
“That church, the Catholic church has been there for Satan and at the right time, they will declare for Satan,”Okotie said.
Okotie who has been married twice and divorced also twice said a beauty pageant will take place in his church next Sunday to select the most beautiful woman in his church.
He also said his yearly “Grace programme” where he makes donations to charity organisations will also take place next Sunday.
The once rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician has been controversial for years.
He once said it was the devil who told him for the first time that he was going to be a preacher.
He also said Nigeria’s famous preacher Prophet T.B. Joshua is the son of the devil and his followers will go straight to hell.
In recent years, he has been saying that God has anointed him to be Nigeria’s president. That prophecy has not come to pass in two presidential elections that he participated in.

Oshiomhole Shares Coffee With Widow! Gives Her N2m

The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole yesterday invited the widow he told to ‘go and die’, Mrs Joy Ifile to the State house where he gave her an automatic job and also donated the sum of N2m to her. The Governor invited her to his office, so that he could personally apologise to her.  In his words, Oshiomhole said;
“Let me apologise to you for the way I spoke to you. I am very sorry about the statement. I have also realised that even in anger, one could still achieve the same result that he set out to without provocative outburst. I apologise from the bottom of my heart, but sometimes you get angry when people compromise your efforts.”
