8-year-old girl raped to death in Akwa Ibom

Her corpse was found near an uncompleted building.
An eight-year-old primary school girl has been raped to death by unknown persons in Ikot Ekang, Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state.
The incident took place on Tuesday night when she was sent on errand by her grandfather at about 6.30 p.m.
It was learnt that the grandfather, Enobong Wilson, raised alarm when the girl did not return three hours after she left the house.
Her corpse was eventually found on Wednesday morning near an uncompleted building in the village.
The girl was a pupil of Christian Victory Nursery and Primary School in the village.
The school’s Head Teacher, Ufok Tommy, said that the deceased was registered in the school by her grandfather at the beginning of this academic year.
“We came to school this morning and discovered a crowd of women gathered in one uncompleted building along the school road discussing the incident.
“So one of my teachers rushed to find out what had happened and was shocked to see the corpse of the primary three pupil of this school.
“We saw her pant, two pairs of sandals and a can fish which she bought for her grandfather on the ground,” he said.
The village head, Ekere Akpan, said it was the first time such incident had happened in the community.
“When I heard of this incident, I reported the matter to the police who came to the scene and took the corpse away.
“The police are doing their investigation and as the village head I will give them all the necessary support to ensure that the culprit is brought to book.
“The blood of the innocent girl will not go in vain,” Mr. Akpan said.
The grandfather was not at home when a correspondent visited his residence.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident.
“It is true that a girl of about eight years old was raped to death in Ikot Ekang, in Etinan.
“We have made some arrests and investigation is on to unravel the culprits,” Mr. Dickson said.
He advised parents and guardians to always be cautious when they send their children and wards on errands to avoid such ugly incident.

SSS arrests Dokubo-Asari Dokubo over inciting comments

President of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has been arrested by the men of the Department of State Security, DSS for making inciting comments on the 2015 election.

The former Niger Delta militant was arrested this morning, less than 24 hours after Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, called on security agents to arrest and caution him for repeatedly making inciting comments. He is currently being interrogated by SSS operatives.

Replying to comments made by former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday Feb 4th Asari Dokubo said that he would make Nigeria ungovernable unless President Jonathan wins a second term ticket in the 2015 presidential election. He also asked Northern politicians to stay away
"If they say the blood of the dogs and the baboon will be soaked in water on the street, in blood on the street, in salt water on the street, we will help them soak them in blood”.
Security operatives believe such a comment is capable of causing chaos in Nigeria.

Why Kano Speaker Resigns, Remains in PDP

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Gambo Sallau, has resigned his position, while a new speaker, Hon. Isyaku Ali Danja, from Gezawa constituency, has been elected.
Sallau said his reason for resigning from the position was based on his decision not to defect to another party.

Gambo’s resignation had been anticipated since Monday, when 26 members of the 31-man Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contingent jumped ship to the All Progressive Congress (APC), handing over the reins of the 40-member Assembly to the opposition party.
Prominent among the PDP members who defected to APC are Deputy Speaker of the House, Alhaji Isyaku Ali Danja; erstwhile Speaker, Yusuf Abdullahi Falgore (representing Rogo constituency); Majority Leader of the House, Engr. Hamisu Ibrahim (Makoda constituency); Deputy Majority Leader, Alhaji Yusuf Babangida Suleman (Gwale constituency); and Chief Whip of the House, Alhaji Abdullahi Iliyasu Yunusa.
“I, Gambo Sallau, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, hereby announce my resignation as Speaker”, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Gambo as saying on Freedom Radio, a broadcast medium based in the north-western city of Kano.
“My decision to resign as Speaker is based on political reasons. Now that the PDP has become an opposition party, I will not continue to be Speaker of the House”.
Born in 1960 in Kafin Maiyaki in Kiru Local Government Area in Kano State, Hon. Gambo was appointed Chairman of his local government between 1997 and 1998. In 1999, he contested and won election into the Kano State House of Assembly. Gambo won again in 2003, and has been an ever-present feature at the Assembly since then.

Arrest Asari Dokubo Now, APC Tells SSS

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as reckless and totally condemnable the threat by Mujahedeen Asari-Dokubo to wage war against Nigeria if President Goodluck Jonathan is defeated in 2015 presidential election, and called on the State Security Service (SSS) to get him arrested.
In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said despite the attacks by oil militants in the Niger Delta and the ongoing insurgency by Boko Haram in some parts of the north, Nigeria has not witnessed a clearer and louder call to war than Asari-Dokubo’s senseless vituperation since the country’s civil war ended in 1970.

It said Nigerians are waiting to see what the SSS, which recently detained for many hours the APC’s deputy national secretary, Nasir El-Rufai over his warning against election rigging in 2015, will do now that an ally of President Jonathan has threatened the very existence of Nigeria, by saying he and his fellow militants would cripple the economy of the country not only in the creeks but also in Nigeria’s territorial waters.
“What on earth gave Asari-Dokubo the confidence to issue threats against a whole nation? If he doesn’t care about elections and democracy, how else could his hero, President Jonathan, have come to power? Does he know the meaning of anarchy? Does he think anyone, no matter how big, is more important than his country or bigger than its constitution?”
‘’When he said President Jonathan must complete the mandatory constitutionally-allowed two terms of eight years or the militants would make Nigeria ungovernable, was he aware that even the North that has become his favourite whipping boy did not complete its own eight years before his kinsman became President?”
‘’It is not Asari-Dokubo’s fault. When we warned against the handing over of the nation’s maritime security to a company owned by an ex-militant in 2012, many thought we were crying wolf where none existed. But the threat by an ex-militant to ensure that no vessel will be allowed to enter the nation’s territorial waters unless President Jonathan is re-elected has shown the dangers inherent in such actions,’’ APC said.
The party wondered why President Jonathan, who said his ambition is not worth anyone’s blood, has neither condemned nor called to order his out-of-control kinsmen like Asari-Dokubo, who speak either on his behalf or for his benefit. It said Asari-Dokubo has overstretched his luck by even trying to dictate to political parties to field only South-South candidates for the presidency in 2015, wondering what gave him the audacity to make such a careless statement.
‘’We in the APC will never be cowed by the senseless, emotional outburst of a man whose sense of decency stretches the size of a coin. We make bold to say that Nigeria will survive and thrive, whether or not some people want it.
“We reiterate the truism that election is the bedrock of democracy, and that anointing of candidates – as Asari-Dokubo would want Nigeria’s political parties to do – is the very antithesis of democracy,’’ the party said.
It stated that the SSS must act immediately or be damned.
‘’There is no better test of the fairness, non-partisanship and professionalism of the SSS than this Asari-Dokubo’s threat to wage war against his own country. If Asari-Dokubo is not above the laws of the land, he must be hauled before the SSS, just like the service did to our deputy national secretary, to explain his statement,’’ APC said.

Confusion in Osun state as students wear religious clothes to school

The Baptist High School, Iwo, Osun State was in a state of chaos and confusion yesterday as some students of the school came into the school premises wearing their religious apparels such as Hijab, choir robes, white garments, fetish veils and Orunmila attires, ditching the approved uniform by the state government. And later during their assembly time, the students all sang songs that were associated with their religious beliefs.
According to reports, the students were registering their displeasure at the state government for the introduction of Unified School Uniforms for all schools irrespective of religious beliefs. The Christians who are owners of the school were protesting the new policy on education set by the state government that allows Muslim students to wear Hijab to Christian's mission public schools.

The new policy of school reclassification by the state government, which was introduced last year has been causing a lot of problems in the state, because it introduced the merger of most of schools, and because some of the schools are faith-based, there's chaos. The Christian schools do not want Muslim students wearing Hijab to school but the state govt has made it legal, thus the continued protest...

True Life Story: How I Got Married To My Own Father

`It was a dark secret. The kind that destroys lives, devastates families and decimates faith. Nobody shared it in any way with Valerie Spruill while her "husband" was alive. Four years after his death, she heard bits of the story. It was something about an absentee father, something about her husband. None of it made sense. That’s not until her uncle finally told her what no one else had: She had unknowingly married the father she never knew.
“I don’t know if he ever knew or not. That conversation didn’t come up,” she said. “I think if he did know, there is no way he could have told me.” “It is devastating. It can destroy you!” Spruill told CNN late Thursday by telephone. “It almost did.” 60-year-old Spruill of Doylestown, Ohio, went public with her story this month, first published in the Akron Beacon Journal, with the hopes that it would help others facing what seem like insurmountable problems. It’s a story that has gone viral, attracting attention as faraway as Australia and India where the questions are always the same, she says: How could that happen? It’s a question that Spruill said she has been grappling with since she first learned the truth in 2004, six years after her "husband" Percy Spruill died. She confirmed her "husband" was indeed her father through a DNA test, hair taken from one of his brushes.

The aftermath of the secret was devastating emotionally — and physically, Spruill suffered two strokes and was diagnosed with diabetes. All of it, she believes was brought on by learning the family secret. “Pain and stress will kill, and I had to release my stress,” Spruill said. “I’m just telling the story to release my pain.” She has a deep, abiding faith in God, who she believes has guided her through the experience — and others that have shaped her life.“You have to have faith,” she said. “If God brought me this far, He’s not going to leave me now.” Spruill met and married her husband/father in Akron and settled in Doylestown, a working class suburb of not more than 2,300 people. It was her second marriage. Spruill was a nice man, a good provider.
He was kind to her three children from her previous marriage. “We had a good life,” she said. She initially struggled with anger, with hating Spruill for what happened. But therapy taught her what happened wasn’t her fault. Her faith taught her to forgive. Initial response to her story has been mixed: “More positive than negative,” she says. In recent days, she has been in contact with a couple who found out after they were married that they were brother and sister. They told her, she said, that her story is helping them deal with their own experience. “They are trying to be friends now,” Spruill said. Others, though, have been less kind.
“They’ve said things like ‘Some secrets should stay secrets,’” she said. “I can’t do anything about what they think. I just know what I think. God is always mighty, and he teaches you to tell the truth no matter what.” Spruill knows not everybody tells the truth. It’s a lesson she learned as a child the hard way. By all accounts, Spruill’s mother got pregnant as a teenager while dating her then 15-year-old father. She was 3-months-old when she was sent to live with her grandmother and grandfather, who she initially believed as she grew up was her father. Spruill said at about age 8 or 9, she discovered that the woman who often visited the house was not a family friend but her mother. But nobody, she said, talked about her father. There’s nobody left to give her the answers about her husband-father. Her mother, Christine, died in 1984. Her grandparents have long since passed. So, too, have a number of Percy Spruill’s relatives.
Spruill knows her mother worked as a prostitute and even got caught up in 1980 high-profile corruption scandal surrounding James Barbuto, a probate judge who was convicted of intimidating investigators and gross sexual imposition for attacking a courthouse clerk in his chambers. “My mother showed me lots of love. All said and done, I have no regrets in my life at all,” she said. She believes she has siblings or half-siblings from Spruill’s previous relationships, including the one with her mother. She said she wants to find them and let them know they are not alone. Spruill, herself, has three children and eight grandchildren. She struggled with telling her children that the man they believed was their step-father was their grandfather.
A therapist “advised me to tell my kids,” she said. “I told them about two years ago. They are remarkable. They are handling it better than I am.” In recent days, shortly before the news broke, she also told her grandchildren. “They have been so supportive.
They are telling me they love me, telling me they will do whatever I need,” she said. In her spare time, since retiring from accounting department where she worked for 34 years at Goodyear, she has been writing down her story with the hopes of publishing it. “I thank God that he gave me a chance to live through all of these,” she said. “It is nothing short of a miracle that I’m still here. I want people to know that they can survive something like this.”
