Leaders of the ruling People's Democratic Party are expected to continue their final consultation today in Abuja before tomorrow's meeting of the National Executive Committee where the new party chairman would emerge.
In the last few days since the exit of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur,various caucuses of the party had met while various contenders have emerged seeking the nod of leaders for the top job. The governors of the party met while the leaders of the Board of the Board of Trustees have also even holding consultation.
Sunday's meeting is however expected to be final one as the NEC meeting tommorow is expected to ratify a common name which would have been sanctioned and ratified by the various caucuses of the party . Sunday Tribune however learnt that the Sunday meeting does not involve statutory convening of meetings of party organs.
Findings revealed that as at Saturday morning ,the various caucuses had arrived at a common nominee who is acceptable to the president's inner caucus ,the governors' forum,the legislative caucus,elders of the party within the board of Trustees and a caucus of the party within the National Working Committee.
Each caucus had reportedly sponsored a nominee until a review which reportedly led to the adoption of the former National Vice Chairman of the party for the North East,Hon Mohammed Wakil from znorno state as a consensus candidate . Wakil was favoured according to checks because he has strong supporters and sponsors within the elders caucus,the governors forum and the inner circle of the president .
The sponsoring Wakil includes two influential governors within the PDP,key leaders of Jonathan's kitchen cabinet,some top Ijaw leaders and what a source called the leadership of women wing of Jonathan political structure.
Wakil however refused to comment on the report when contacted,explaining that he is busy with assignments of state.
The signal of Wakil's adoption has however not stopped other contenders to forge ahead with their ambition with reports indicating that former leader of defunct All Nigerian Progressive Party,Mohammed Kumalia also from znorno state was drafted into the race by a governor late on Friday.
Former presidential Adviser on National Assembly matters,Senator Abba Aji also from Borno is said to be putting up strong showing while the minister of Transport ,Idris Umar is now torn between his boss ,president Jonathan who has barred ministers from joining the race and a governor who is sponsoring him for the top job.
Sunday Tribune however learnt that the initial agreement that the slot should go to Borno is still subsisting even though reports indicated that it was hard convincing some party chiefs that a non PDP state should produce the party chairman.
