Delta 2015: Aniocha Leaders Back Olejeme

Aniocha people at home and abroad were on Sunday told to embrace politics anchored on qualities like credibility, competence and ability to deliver the dividend of democracy to the people.
Making the call in Ogwashi Uku, a group under the umbrella, Aniocha Leaders of Today said “the next governor must be a person with articulate vision and unquestionable credibility”.

The leaders who described Ngozi Olejeme as the best hand for the governorship job in 2015 said the NSITF boss built a strong and purposeful relationship among the various communities in Anioma.

“Dr. Ngozi Olejeme stands out of the pack of pretenders, traders and contenders. She is a large hearted philanthropist, a reputable humanist, a God fearing individual and a very successful woman, whose success flows not from her material possession but from the many lives she has touched in the state with her love and kindness” the leaders said.
According to a statement by the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Michael Uwechie, the leaders said “ Olejeme’s ambition is vital to the development of the state”.

“She is coming to serve and not to make money” the statement said.
The leaders appealed to the governor of the state, the chairman of the PDP at the state level and other chieftains of the party not to do a great disservice to the people by working against Olejeme’s interest.
The statement also reminded the people to be careful of those who claimed to be in the governorship race, yet fixed their pockets by blackmailing other aspirants.
“Olejeme is eyeing the governorship job to develop the people and the entire place” the statement said.
“Olejeme has a very bright chance of winning the governorship election. She is the best in terms of her track records and pedigree” the statement added.

Tension in Delta State over imposition of chairmanship candidate

There are palpable tension in Delta state over the chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state.
Stakeholders in the local government area on Saturday rejected Mr. Ifeanyi Osakwe, purportedly anointed by a former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori. They also described him as a stranger.
The leaders who appealed to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and the State Chairman of the Party, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi to halt the imposition of a chairmanship candidate on the people of Ndokwa West, attributed their position on the poor performance of Osakwe in the senate, particularly his inability to attract dividend of democracy to the area and his failure to empower or create jobs for the people.
Speaking to newsmen in Kwale on behalf of the protesters, Barrister Nduka Benson, Mr. Nduka Omede among others, said the planned imposition of a candidate by Senator Osakwe was not acceptable, saying that all the aspirants should be given a level playing ground to test their popularity at the PDP primary elections.
According to them, the imposition of any candidate against the will of the people could lead to violence and unimaginable crisis, adding that imposition of candidates was a negation and violation of PDP’s stand on free, fair, credible and transparent primary elections.
They reiterated their unalloyed support for Governor Uduaghan and Chief Peter Nwaoboshi and appealed to them to use their good offices to prevail on Senator Osakwe to retrace his steps to avoid crisis in Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

Husband Batters Wife Over Piece of Fish

A 34 year old Fatima Bankole said she got the beating of her life from her husband, Alhaji Kamoru Bankole, for taking a piece of fish from the cooking pot.The incident which occurred on Wednesday July 16th now left the woman with about 26 stitches on her face as a result of the brutal assault.

Narrating what led to the attack, Fatima, who is one of three wives, said as wives of the Alhaji, they had a roaster for cooking. She said on the day any of them cooked, they would first dish for their husband, then the children before serving themselves.

She said on the day of the attack, the last wife had finished her cooking and served their husband and the children. She, Fatima, then went for her own meal but as soon as the third wife saw her food, she immediately went to report to their husband that Fatimah had taken the largest chunk of fish in the pot. Not listening to her explanation that she only took pieces of fish scattered in the pot, their husband descended on her with punches to her face. She said she bled for hours and was thereafter locked up in a room for three days before she found a way of escape.

She said her husband had physically assaulted her several times in the past and even gave an account of a previous attack where her husband pulled her hair until it hurt so bad it gave her head injuries.

After her escape, Fatimah was assisted to the hospital by her neighbors. Her husband has since been arrested after a petition by a Women Arise civil group in Lagos. He is expected to be in court next week.

Lucozade 10 Kilometers Marathon Fun Run Holds in Lagos

August 16 has been announced as the date for the Lucozade Sport 10 Kilometer Fun Run Reloaded, an event that provides leverage for Lagosians to revel in the fun of running to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is the second edition of the event sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Limited (GSK) as the maiden edition held on November 23 2013.

GSK, makers of Lucozade Sport isotonic drink and the Lagos State Ministry of Youth, Sport and Social Development are collaborating to organize the 10 kilometers Marathon Fun Run to provide vent for health conscious Lagosians and fitness lovers to live out their passion in a secure and friendly event. The Memorandum of Understanding for the partnership was signed last year and culminated in the first race, which had a number of corporates and individuals registering and participating in the event that ended with a colorful ceremony at the Muri Okunola Park on Victoria Island.

Dubbed the Lucozade Sport Lagos City 10km Fun Run, the event is targeted at Staff of Blue Chip organizations, Businessmen and women, professional athletes and students of tertiary institutions who otherwise may not have all the time to keep fit through regular exercises at the gym.

According to Justin Korteasa, the Managing Director of GSK, " the race which comes under our flagship sport engagement brand, Lucozade Sport is another contribution of GSK to the emerging Lagos Mega City concept. We have Route Plan that commences with a Start Point in Marina and having every runner converge on the Finish Point at Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island".

The event was last year endorsed by the Lagos State Athletics Association, which serves as the Technical Partners. Participation in the event is expected to have teams from leading corporate organizations and professional marathon runners. Suspected Kaduna bomber disguised as a woman arrested

The Nigerian military in a statement released on its website says it has taken into custody a man dressed as a woman who is suspected to be connected with the Wednesday 23rd bomb blast targeted at former Head of state, General Buhari. (Pic they released above) See the statement below:

Troops are holding a man suspected to be connected with the explosion targeted at General Buhari on Wednesday.  The young man who was apprehended by military patrol team that swooped on the area immediately after the explosion, had disguised as a woman clad in female garb to exude femininity with a brazier affixed to his chest. 

The suspect was arrested while trying to fizzle into a crowd of onlookers when the patrol team arrived the scene.  Youths in the area attempted to mob him while he was being arrested but were restrained by troops who quickly whisked him away in an armoured personnel carrier.  

He is currently being interrogated by security agencies

Pupils in Accra educated on causes of food poisoning

Coordinator of the Self Help Education Programme of Ghana Education Service, Mrs Theodora Jonah,  has noted that mishandling of prepared food is a threat to public health.

She also attributed the situation to combination of factors including lack of self-compliance attitude among food vendors and best practices in food preparation.

Mrs Jonah was addressing school children at the Salvation and Korle Gonno Cluster of Schools and urged them not to buy food at unhygienic places to enable them stay healthy.

She asked the school children to always wash their hands with running water in order not to contract cholera.

Numo Blafo III, Public Relation Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in an interview with Ghana News Agency said because school children are unaware of the possible sources of food contamination, it is important to sensitise them on some of the causes.

He said diarrhoea and cholera are related to food contamination often caused by street vendors.

Numo Blafo advised the school children not to buy food exposed to flies and around gutters, adding: “Because you cannot be sure of its health safety.”

Sambo tells Islamic Bank to explore Nigeria’s opportunities as Africa’s biggest economy

 Nigeria’s Vice President, Namadi Sambo, has called on the Islamic Development Bank to utilise the position of Nigeria as the biggest economy in Africa to finance development projects in the country.

The Vice President made the call in Makkah when he received the President of the Islamic Development Bank, IDB, Ahmad Ali, who was in the country for bilateral talks on various IDB operations in Nigeria.

“I extend the appreciation of the President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who has been informed about this visit. We appreciate the contribution of IDB to the development of the private sector in Nigeria, and we need to see more of that”, said Vice President said.

Mr. Sambo, who had in his delegation billionaire Aliko Dangote, and Kashim Shettima of Berbedos Group, told the IDB President that Nigeria was planning to borrow for 2014-2016, and therefore IDB should take advantage of the opportunities offered in Nigeria in financing projects.

He said government has plans to invest heavily in gas processing and production, construction of power plants, the development of small and medium enterprises, SMEs as well as in transportation.

The Vice President expressed deep concern over the high interest rates charged by various banks on SMEs, urging the IDB to use the resources at its disposal to come up with a formula using Islamic finance in order to support small scale entrepreneurs.

While commending IDB for speeding up the process of opening a gateway office in Nigeria, which is due to commence operation very soon, Mr. Sambo said the bank has lived up to its expectation as it celebrate 40th anniversary.

The President of IDB, Ahmad Ali, thanked Nigeria for its commitment to IDB, urging him to use his influence to ensure the take-off of the bilingual education programme in Nigeria which can help in addressing some of the concerns of Nigeria affecting the youth.

Mr. Ali called on the Vice President to work with IDB in starting a crash programme on the bilingual education programme in order to maximize its benefit.

The President of IDB was accompanied by representatives from the entities of the IDB Group, the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), International Islamic Trade Corporation (ITFC) and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC).
