The syndicate was based in Abuja
The Nigeria Police on Wednesday said it arrested five members of a syndicate that specialises in forging documents and certificates in Abuja.
The suspects – Emmanuel Onyehiela, Ugorji Ramsey, Emeka Chukwu, Chinyere Bright and Abdulazeez Sadiq – were arrested by a team of operatives attached to the International Police Organization, INTERPOL, section, Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, Abuja.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in a statement said the suspects were arrested following a tip off and a discreet investigation at the syndicate’s base at UTC Shopping Complex, Area 10 Garki, Abuja. Mr. Mba said, as part of the investigations, police undercover agents presented themselves as prospective clients.
“The syndicate which has its operational base at the UTC Shopping Complex, Area 10 Garki, Abuja specialises in forging documents such as: WAEC Certificates, University Degrees, NYSC Discharge Certificates, assorted land documents, certificates of incorporation,” Mr. Mba said.
He said the suspects also engaged in falsification of travel documents and drivers’ licenses for a fee of N5,000 to N30,000, depending on the status of their client or urgency of need.
The exhibits recovered from the suspects included forged copies of Corporate Affairs Commission documents, land document of Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, University of Abuja degree and official stamps, and other sundry fake documents.
Also recovered were electronic equipment allegedly used in perpetrating the crime such as laptops, desktop computers and printers.
Mr. Mba said that the suspects had made useful statements to the police and would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
