Bomb scare in Bayelsa as mob apprehend man with bags of cables


There was pandemonium yesterday in Yenagoa,the Bayelsa state capital, following a bomb scared triggered off by the arrest of a man with a suspicious bags of cable along the Yenezue-Egene area of the Yenagoa local Government area.
The incident,which occurred at about 2 pm,along the old PDP Road, Yenagoa after a man dropped two bags suspected to be laden with explosives.
The man,suspected to have come from the northern part of the country was said to be carrying two (Ghana-must-go) bags when he was accosted by members of the public and some operatives of the Air Force.
A source who pleaded anonymity said instead of surrendering the bags to security operatives, the man abandoned them and ran away.
"His action led to panic along the road. People fled the area and there was confusion. But shortly after that men of the anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police arrived the scene", he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, said he dispatched the anti-bomb squad of his command to investigate the bags.
He said the operatives opened the bags and discovered they were loaded with electric wire.
"We recovered the bags but they were containing only electric wire. There was no explosive in them. It could be that the man stole them.
"But we appreciate the efforts of members of the public because they didn't touch the bags. We also appeal to them to continue to monitor their environment and report suspicious movements and objects to the police", he said.
