The police said the suspect confessed to the crime.
A middle-aged Nigerien, Mamodu Bashir Ibrahim, was on Thursday arrested by the Ogun State Police Command on for allegedly beheading a toddler, after raping the mother.
It was learnt that the suspect committed the crime on Wednesday in Ofada community, a suburb of Owode-Egba town situated in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area the state. He was a resident of the area.
The suspect reportedly trailed the unsuspecting woman into a bush where she had gone to ease herself.
A resident of the area said the suspect dragged the woman and the baby into an uncompleted building, removed the baby from the mother’s back and raped the latter. The suspect then reportedly stabbed the woman before beheading the toddler.
The resident said someone, who had trailed the suspect to the uncompleted building, alerted others. The suspect had escaped before help arrived. He was, however, arrested on Thursday at Ibafo Village, which is a few kilometres to the crime scene.
Following his arrest, the suspect led officials of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ogun State Police Command to the scene. Although the severed head was not recovered, the knife used to carry out the murder was. The two-year-old’s body and the mother had been retrieved by members of the community.
The Ogun Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He explained that the suspect was arrested through the help of some community leaders after he initially escaped from the scene.
Mr. Adejobi said the suspect confessed to the crime and also confessed that he sold the severed toddler’s head to a woman in Ibadan. The spokesperson said detectives were on the trail of the buyer and investigations were ongoing.
According to reports, the remains of the infant has been buried while the mother is responding to treatment at the hospital.
