President
John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States( ECOWAS ), would
on Friday, May 30, host an emergency
meeting for leaders of member- states in Accra.
Although details of the meeting
were not fully disclosed, it is believed to revolve around the activities of
Boko Haram in Nigeria where over 200 school children are currently being held
hostage by the group.
Mr Ben Dotsei Malor, Head of
Communications and Presidential Spokesperson who announced this at a media
briefing at the Flagstaff House on Wednesday, said the meeting was also in
fulfillment of President Mahama's promise to improve on existing structures to
enhance Regional co-operation.
He said President Mahama who
would be opening the first session before the closed- door deliberations, believed in African unity and would therefore
use his position as chair of the ECOWAS to set the pace for continental
integration in the coming years.
Mr Malor said, President Mahama
during his election in CĂ´te d'Ivoire,
said he would ensure peace and security, integration and development of
West Africa and the development, expansion and rehabilitation of
infrastructure, and hoped that could
only be achieved through unity of purpose.
The Head of Communications said
President Mahama had the ambition of ensuring that the West African Gas
Pipeline and Abidjan-Lagos road was executed for ease evacuation of goods and
services.
This is the first meeting
President Mahama is organising for member- states in Ghana since assuming the
chair of the regional community.
