16 cultists arrested by Police in Ogun


The Ogun State Police Command at the weekend arrested 16 suspected cult members, among them eight students of ICT Polytechnic Itori in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed to our correspondent in Abeokuta, said the suspects were arrested on Saturday at about 9.45p.m while conducting initiation rituals for new members at a hideout located in Itori town.
He said detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ewekoro Division, acting on an intelligence on the activities of cult groups in the area, stormed the initiation arena in Itori and arrested the suspects some of whom were non-students.
Those arrested according to police spokesman are Akintunde Paul, Seyi Meshinoye, Fowoshade Gbemisola, Dare Olabode, Oyetayo Bolaji, Akintunde Femi, Ajibola Abiola, Amosun Eniola, Shola Ogunniyi, Fashina Micheal, Bello Oyedeji, Adeshola Amore, Ebi Victor, Ogunsola Ibrahim, Babatunde Allyson, and Awobajo Babatunde.
Mr. Adejobi said the suspects have declined to mention the group or confraternity they belong to, but added that some of the weapons and items recovered from them at the initiation ground included guns, charms, cutlasses, broken bottles, axes etc.
He said the suspects have been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation Eleweran Abeokuta for further interrogation as directed by the Commissioner of Police Ikemefuna Okoye.
“The commissioner has therefore warned others who are cultists to desist from such destructive activities as the command will not spare anyone caught in the act or anyone seen or perceived or caught for sponsoring the groups in the state,” Mr. Adejobi said.
He added further that, the commissioner has directed that the suspects be charged to court immediately after investigation.
