COEASU suspends strike

Ibrahim Shekarau
The College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, has suspended its strike pending the outcome of its meeting with Minster of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau.
Mr. Shekarau will meet with COEASU on Thursday to discuss the strike.
The chairman of COEASU at the College of Education, Zuba, Abuja, Ahmed Bazza, however, explained that the strike has not been called off but suspended by the “in-house” – that is the leaders of COEASU.
“We have not called off but only suspended the strike. The in-house have suspended the strike pending the outcome of the meeting with the new minster on Thursday,” Mr. Bazza said.
The lecturers’ demands include proper funding of the colleges and adequate welfare for lecturers.
The lecturers commenced their strike on December 18, 2013 after several failed meetings with government representatives.
Nigeria’s Colleges of Education are supposed to, among others, train teachers who would be able to teach in Nigeria’s primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools.
