Malawi President Peter Mutharika has appointed Goodall Gondwe as the new Finance and Economic Planning and Development Minister.
Gondwe, 77 whose appointment was also announced on the official Malawi government website on Friday becomes the first cabinet minister to be unveiled by the new administration.
President Mutharika during the campaign period announced he would have a lean 20 member cabinet. Malawians are waiting to see who else will make the list.
Meanwhile, Gondwe is returning to cabinet after resigning from his last portfolio as Economic Planning and Development Minister after he was arrested and charged with treason.
He is also a former IMF official and was also head of the former director of the Africa Division for the International Monetary Fund before returning to Malawi to work as a politician.

He takes over from Maxwell Mkwezalamba and is credited for Malawi’s success during Mutharika’s first term.
